WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Newly acquired Red Sox infielder Curtis Mead is heading to the injured list.
According to main league sources, the Sox will place Mead on the injured list Tuesday, one day after he got drilled on the bottom of his left hand/wrist by a 95-mile-per-hour fastball from Athletics starter Jack Perkins. Mead stayed in Monday’s game for one inning, then left prior to the underside of the fifth inning.
Initial X-rays at Sutter Health Park have been damaging, leaving interim manager Chad Tracy optimistic that the Red Sox “may have dodged a bullet.” But additional analysis Tuesday led to the choice to place Mead, acquired Saturday evening from the Nationals for Connelly Early, on the injured list.
With Mead sidelined, the Sox are anticipated to name up Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester. With the Sox on the West Coast, Sogard (a Sacramento native) is unlikely to be a part of the staff till Wednesday.
