Paramount CEO David Ellison has pledged to help editorial independence at CNN, saying it “needs to be maintained,” amid widespread concern about his firm’s plans for the information community.
Last week, Ellison emerged victorious in a months-long battle for Warner Bros Discovery after Netflix pulled out of the bidding course of. Now, Paramount is working to win regulatory approval of the deal within the US and different markets.
Appearing Thursday morning on CNBC for his first interview because the WBD deal was struck, Ellison didn’t deal with the potential for a merger of CNN with Paramount’s CBS News division.
CNBC’s David Faber mentioned there are “a lot of concerns, certainly when you put CNN and CBS — well, I don’t want to say, put them together, but I wonder, is that kind of part of the plan in terms of newsgathering?” Then Faber additionally requested, “What do you tell employees of CNN at this point as they are concerned about their own future at that network?”
“CNN is an incredible brand with an incredible team,” Ellison mentioned, “and we absolutely believe in the independence that needs to be maintained, obviously, for those incredible journalists, and we want to support that going forward.”
Later within the interview, Faber mentioned, “Unfortunately, the world we live in has a political overlay on almost everything going on in the corporate world, certainly when it comes to news organizations.”
“There is certainly a perception and or a fear, perhaps, that once you take control of CNN and given the changes you’ve made at CBS, that you will be more beholden to the Trump administration,” Faber mentioned. “Can you address that, that potential fear, at least, on the part of many?”
Ellison appeared ready for the query. “Editorial independence will actually be maintained,” he mentioned. “It’s maintained at CBS, it’ll be maintained at CNN.”
Then he invoked an idea that he has talked about before: That “70%” of Americans are roughly within the center, “from center left to center right,” and aren’t a part of the hyperpartisan extremes.
“Really, who we want to talk to is the 70% of Americans — and really around the world — that identify as center left, as center right,” Ellison mentioned.
“We want to be in the truth business, we want to be in the trust business, and that’s not going to change,” he added.
Ellison’s feedback are noteworthy as a result of Paramount’s imaginative and prescient for CNN has been one thing of a thriller.
Critics have accused each the previous and new house owners of Paramount of creating modifications to appease President Trump and obtain favorable therapy from regulators.
“Ellison will readily throw the First Amendment, CNN’s reporters and HBO’s filmmakers under the bus if they stand in the way of expanding his corporate empire and fattening his pockets,” Freedom of the Press Foundation chief of advocacy Seth Stern charged final week.
“But censorship is bad for business,” Stern added.
And individuals near Ellison have made an identical level privately: They acknowledge CNN is strongly worthwhile and wish to develop the enterprise.
Last fall, Ellison spent $150 million to accumulate The Free Press and make its co-founder, Bari Weiss, the editor-in-chief of CBS News.
Several ensuing controversies at CBS News have unnerved journalists each inside and out of doors the corporate and raised questions on her management.
Weiss, for her half, instructed workers in January that her solely conversations with Ellison have been “about fairness. That’s it. He’s never seen anything before it aired. Nothing of that sort.”
Both Ellison and Weiss have talked about prioritizing streaming and social media inside TV networks that more and more look out of step with fashionable viewing habits.
In Thursday’s interview, Ellison mentioned he desires CNN and CBS News “to be a part of transitioning to streaming,” saying the pivot provides shoppers extra selection.
“If they want to watch our incredible news brands on broadcast, they can do that. If they want to watch on cable, they can do that,” Ellison mentioned. “But we also want to create a world where if they want to watch on streaming, they can do that, and where we can really meet consumers where they are.”
He added, “We’re going to invest in the news business, and we think this transaction will be a positive for both CBS News and CNN.”
CBS News has had its personal live-streaming arm for years, and CNN has a subscription streaming product referred to as All Access.
In the interview, Ellison expressed confidence that the Paramount-WBD merger will move regulatory muster comparatively shortly.
When requested whether or not California’s lawyer basic, who has promised a “vigorous” evaluation, could pose a problem to the merger, Ellison mentioned, “at the end of the day, we’re all governed by the law.”
“The reality of this is there is nothing in this transaction that trips anything that would create cause for concern,” Ellison mentioned.
