NYC traffic: New York City to impose 15 mph school zones, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announces

NEW YORK (WABC) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani introduced a significant change at bettering pedestrian security on Monday by decreasing the velocity restrict in metropolis school zones.

On most New York City streets, the velocity restrict is 25 mph, enforced by lots of of velocity cameras, most of them in school zones.

But critics have insisted that restrict remains to be too excessive. On Monday afternoon, Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated the critics are proper.

The mayor introduced that the velocity restrict in school zones can be instantly decreased to 15 mph in 700 school zones throughout the town.

The transfer comes greater than a decade after the demise of 12 year-old Sammy Cohen Eckstein, who was struck and killed by a dashing automotive in Brooklyn in 2013. State lawmakers enacted Sammy’s Law, which allowed the town of New York to set its personal velocity limits.

But within the months that adopted, the town has been sluggish to scale back velocity limits at school zones.

“A law is only as effective as the will to implement it. We have seen the absence of that will reflected in the fact that only 100 locations across the city have seen their speed limits reduced in the months following the legislation’s passage,” Mamdani stated.

In the approaching months, the town will decrease a 3rd of school zones to 15 mph, with the rest to be lowered inside 4 years. Julaine Williams misplaced her daughter, Doniqueca Cook, to a dashing, reckless driver.

“Our kids need to be safe. Taking that child takes the whole family — the grandkids, the aunts, the nieces, the uncle. It’s devastating. I live this every day,” Williams stated.

The new limits are anticipated to go into impact after a compulsory 60-day public remark interval.
