Missing Mass. hiker found dead on Franconia Notch trail

A lacking hiker from West Roxbury was found dead Tuesday on a trail on Franconia Notch in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, officers mentioned Wednesday.

Six other hikers from Massachusetts had been rescued from the White Mountains previously week and officers had warned individuals to be ready for quickly altering climate circumstances.

Kent Wood, 61, had pushed to the Lafayette Campground in Lincoln, N.H., and set off for a weekend mountain climbing journey on Saturday “with warm temperatures and clear skies,” according to officials.

His household turned involved after not listening to from him for 2 days and reported him lacking.

“While gathering information on where to search, rescuers learned that Kent was prepared for warmer conditions and not the 3-5 inches of snow that had fallen between Sunday and Monday in the Franconia Notch area,” the state’s Fish and Game division posted on social media.

Search groups found the person’s physique at 7:31 p.m. Tuesday on a distant part of the Kinsman Pond Trail in Lincoln, greater than 5 miles from his automobile, officers mentioned.

“Hikers are reminded that spring conditions in the mountains can change quickly and preparation is an important part of your trip,” officers mentioned Tuesday whereas saying an earlier rescue mission. “Having the 10 essentials which includes a map, can greatly improve the outcome of your trip to the mountains.”

On Monday, a North Reading man was rescued from a trail after getting caught in a snowstorm. Two youngsters from Plymouth had been rescued from the summit of Mount Washington on Saturday evening after chilly temperatures and excessive winds precipitated them to take shelter exterior a park constructing.

On Friday, rescuers guided three Haverhill girls down a Franconia Notch trail after they had been caught after dusk with out lights.
