Three established YouTube channels have sued Apple, alleging that the corporate violated the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by unlawfully accessing and scraping thousands and thousands of copyrighted movies from YouTube to coach its AI fashions.
In a category motion lawsuit filed in California federal court docket final week, the house owners of the YouTube channels h3h3Productions (plus H3 Podcast and H3 Podcast Highlights), MrShortGame Golf, and Golfholics allege that Apple “deliberately circumvented” YouTube’s protections towards video scraping and “profited substantially” by doing so.
Apple’s analysis papers point out that among the YouTube movies uploaded by the plaintiffs have been used to coach its AI fashions, the grievance alleges.
Apple’s actions have been “not only unlawful, but an unconscionable attack on the community of content creators whose content is used to fuel the multi-trillion-dollar generative AI industry without any compensation,” the lawsuit provides.
The plaintiffs are in search of an injunction and damages individually and on behalf of all others equally located within the U.S., per the grievance.
In latest months, the identical three YouTube channels have filed related lawsuits towards different tech giants, together with Meta, Nvidia, ByteDance, and Snap.
