The St Cecilia Orchestra will perform at Ripon Cathedral, beneath the baton of conductor Xen Kelsey and joined by violinist Jack Liebeck and cellist Tim Lowe, on Saturday, April 25, .
This live performance marks a special day, that includes works by Weber, Brahms, and Dvořák.
Tim Lowe mentioned: “Playing one of Brahms’ most loved works with Jack, conducted by Xen Kelsey with his fabulous orchestra, will fill Ripon Cathedral with drama, warmth, and in the last moments, joy, with its triumphant A major finish.”
The night will open with the overture to Weber’s remaining opera, Oberon, an early Romantic masterpiece that tells the story of the knight Hüon and the magic horn given to him by Oberon.
Almost 200 years outdated to the day, the overture was first carried out on April 12, 1826.
The programme continues with Brahms’ Double Concerto for violin and cello, his remaining orchestral work, typically described as “a titanic work, seemingly hewn from musical granite” (LA Philharmonic).
Jack Liebeck, famous for his “flawless technical mastery” and “beguiling silvery tone” (BBC Music Magazine), is an internationally recognised soloist.
He can be recognized for his performances on movie soundtracks together with Jane Eyre, Anna Karenina, and The Theory of Everything, and has had two concertos composed particularly for him.
Tim Lowe, praised for his “remarkable agility and assertive sound” (James Palmer), is equally in demand.
The live performance will conclude with Dvořák’s Symphony No 7, broadly thought of the top of the composer’s symphonic output.
Commissioned by the London Philharmonic Society however impressed by Dvořák’s robust Czech patriotism and the battle for independence from the Habsburgs, the symphony is stuffed with Slavonic melodies and emotional depth, ending on a jubilant notice.
