New laws to make it easier to cancel subscriptions

Kim Biggs from Lincolnshire advised BBC News she has been “caught out” by annual subscription charges that renew robotically.

Kim was notified that her free trial of AVG, the anti-virus software program was about to finish..she stated making an attempt to cancel the subscription was “exasperating”.

“It took quite a lot of time to wade through all the pages, all the information that was presented when you first clicked onto the ‘unsubscribe’ part on the website.

“Eventually I clicked on the fitting choices to get a web based type to request a refund. I accomplished this however didn’t obtain my refund.”

Kim said the phone number for AVG ‘s support centre was not easy to find online.

When she did speak to a support agent Kim said she was told “the shape that I’d despatched in is principally disregarded by them, that you’ve got to communicate to them by means of the help centre to get your refund, which was actually annoying”.

“I had to maintain repeating that I simply wished a refund, as she was very persistent in pushing the merchandise out there, making an attempt to get me to change my thoughts.”

The BBC has requested AVG for a remark.
