Driver who left scene of crash in Darrington dies after being hit by lorry on A1(M)

A van driver who walked away from his car following a crash died 20 minutes later after being hit by a lorry on a motorway.

The 60-year-old, from Leeds, was in a Toyota Proace City van that was concerned in a collision with a white Renault Captur on Valley Road in Darrington, West Yorkshire, at 7.16am on Thursday.

West Yorkshire Police stated he “left the area on foot” and was seen at about 7.36am strolling on the onerous shoulder of the A1(M).

A short while later he was hit by a lorry close to the Ferrybridge junction. He died on the scene.

The motorway was closed for a lot of the day for investigations.

Det Insp Daniel Ridgway stated: “This is a tragic incident in which a person has misplaced his life. His household are conscious and are being provided specialist assist.

“We have already spoken to a quantity of witnesses, however I’d urge anybody else who has any data that would help us in our enquiries to please get in contact.”

The driver of the Renault Captur involved in the initial collision was taken to hospital for checks.
