Falkirk ace Leon McCann and household set for special occasion in opposition to St Mirren this Saturday.
With the chance to safe a spot within the Scottish Premiership’s prime six – this weekend’s residence match in opposition to St Mirren may very well be one other special occasion in what has been an unbelievable season thus far for Falkirk.
But regardless of the consequence on Saturday, full-back Leon McCann will cherish what’s set to be an emotional day for his household. His 11-month outdated son Brooks – born profoundly demise – will attend his first match since being fitted with a cochlear implant. That gadget consists of an implant, put below the pores and skin throughout an operation, that picks up indicators that are despatched to the mind permitting folks to listen to. Earlier this month, Brooks heard his dad and mom’ voice for the primary time. The following evening from that, Leon put in a superb efficiency to assist the Bairns return to Hampden within the Scottish Cup, serving to the group beat Dundee United 2-1 at residence.
Showings like which have earned the full-back a brand new contract, and it has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for the 26-year-old soccer, who joined then third-tier Falkirk again in again in the summertime of 2021.
Falkirk ace Leon McCann particulars Brooks’ journey
Speaking forward of the St Mirren match, Leon detailed what it was like when the implant was first switched on, and the way issues are going typically on and off the pitch.
He mentioned: “It was unbelievable for us seeing his reaction to hearing noise for the first time, after being in complete silence for 11 months, it was life-changing for us, and now just about teaching him different ways and techniques that his brain can analyse what the sound is and how to put two and two together. If it’s my voice or his mum’s (Morgan) voice, that’ll help his speech come on. That’s our next task, to try and make sure that he gets as much help as possible.
“The first thing we do in the morning is obviously put his ears on. It’s his magic ears, as we call them. At the very start, probably the first week, he was getting very tired very easily. We are doing auditory-verbal lessons, which is different techniques showing him where sounds come from and how they get his brain working. It will allow his brain to develop. He’s been quite reactive which is great.”

Leon and his accomplice Morgan began a charity, B Heard, geared toward households who could not have the ability to afford entry to assets, like BSL programs and auditory verbal remedy. And that has been supported by the broader Falkirk fanbase, with a current assortment on the match in opposition to Kilmarnock having raised over £2,000.
“That’s why the charity was set up, the verbal lessons are quite expensive and for people who couldn’t afford it, their son or daughter would be left behind everybody, which we wanted to try and make a change on. Others aren’t in the position we are in. The PFA helped out and the club have been amazing.
“For Brooks’ big switch on day, which was before a big game, I had to miss the pre-match preparation and it was no issue. The gaffer (John McGlynn) and Smudger (Paul Smith) have been amazing. The changing room has been brilliant. They wore the B Heard tops for the Kilmarnock match and have been so supportive. Everyone is always checking in to make sure he is okay.”
Leon added that his journey over the previous 12 months has been given a contemporary perspective: “I’ve been coming home to a boy who had never heard his mum and dad’s voice. There’s a lot more to life than football so that’s made me a better person. If we get beat, or I didn’t play it, it usually affects your weekend but you’re coming home to a son who relies on you and he doesn’t really care what’s happened – you need to put on that smile and be there for your partner too. She’s been going through the exact same thing, so there’s no point in me being a burden in the house. It put into perspective that football is my life but I’ve got another thing more important than football, my family. Morgan has been incredible.”
