The BBC spoke to a police officer at Chanasongkhram police station in Bangkok who confirmed that Rory was arrested between 9-10 March on the costs of theft by evening for stealing a mobile phone.

When requested in regards to the claims that it had been a misunderstanding, the officer stated there was no report about it and that “the offence has been done.”

He stated the case was now on the prosecutor’s degree and stated different particulars could be clarified in court docket.

Under the Thai prison code, such a cost is punished with imprisonment of 1 to 5 years and fined £46 to £228, or 2,000 to 10,000 Thai baht.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office confirmed it was supporting a UK resident arrested overseas and was in communication with the native authorities.
