Disney has introduced Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen at Magic Kingdom on May 3, 2026 with new monitor, refreshed trains, and a lowered top requirement.
The top requirement will drop to 38 inches when the attraction reopens, down from the earlier 40-inch minimal. Disney says the change follows “a comprehensive review from our safety teams” alongside with all of the enhancements made through the refurbishment. This now places Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on the similar top requirement as Walt Disney World’s different massively standard household coaster, Slinky Dog Dash at Hollywood Studios.
New Track and Trains

The attraction continues its story of Barnabas T. Bullion, who struck gold within the Big Thunder area throughout America’s first main gold rush. He began the Big Thunder Mountain Company with desires of riches, however shortly discovered himself in a battle with nature.
Strange issues began occurring. Machines failed. Cave-ins shut mines down. No matter how deep the miners dug, the forces of Big Thunder fought again.
Disney says visitors who board the runaway trains will study “just how wild the wilderness can get.”
Mountain-Top to Cavern-Deep Refurbishment
Disney describes this as a “mountain-top to cavern-deep refurbishment” meant to maintain the basic attraction prepared to thrill visitors for years to come back.
Effects which were dormant for years are being restored. The primary entrance signal has been changed with a restored model, and scaffolding has been faraway from the attraction.
