Stories about miscarriage and pregnancy loss will be underrepresented on display screen, and Cullen hopes this present will create “a space for someone to share”.
Essiedu attributes the dearth of dialog round these subjects to a broader discomfort round grief.
“There’s a sensitivity around any kind of grief and an assumption that those questions shouldn’t be asked,” explains the 35-year-old. “That can lead to there being stigma and shame around the topic, and that’s when people feel isolated and alone.”
He credit the author and director, Stefan Golaszewski, for making a present that at it is core has “such humility and honest”.
Golaszewski’s different collection writing credit embrace Bafta-winning BBC comedies Mum and Him & Her, together with the BBC drama Marriage.
Speaking to the BBC, Golaszewski says he is been by way of related experiences to these handled within the present. However it is not an autobiographical account of his life so he was “able to create something more objectively dramatic”.
“I was aware of the good and positivity that can come from opening up about this subject matter that’s so difficult to talk about.”
He hopes the present will “create a space where people can feel less alone” as points corresponding to miscarriages “have a stigma around it”.
He provides that typically points corresponding to pregnancy loss are sometimes medicalised, so there is a disconnect between somebody’s expertise of grief – and the way others understand it.
In distinction to the fast-paced dramas audiences could also be extra acquainted with, Babies lingers within the quiet – the pauses, the unfinished conversations and the issues left unsaid between its characters.
Golaszewski explains it is not intentional and he is displaying that “the truth of grief is that it is banal”.
“Your heart is blown to pieces but do you still need to eat dinner and go to work so I’m not stylistically chasing silence, just representing the truth of it.”
