Iran steps up attacks on energy targets as tankers hit

The two tankers have been set ablaze close to Iraq’s southern port of Basra, forcing a pause of operations on the nation’s oil terminals.

The Iraqi News Agency, citing a navy official, studies that 38 crew members have been rescued and one individual died.

Iran’s official information company IRNA mentioned the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck one of many two ships – a US-owned vessel, the Safesea Vishnu – as a result of it had ignored warnings and did not adjust to orders.

Indian authorities earlier mentioned the Safesea Vishnu, which sails beneath the Marshall Islands flag, was attacked by an unmanned pace boat.

A second vessel, Greek-owned and Maltese-flagged Zefyros, was struck whereas it was in the course of a ship-to-ship switch with the Safesea Vishnu, the vessel’s supervisor Benetech Shipping mentioned.

Separately, a Chinese-owned container ship of the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was “struck by an unknown projectile causing a small fire onboard”, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre mentioned.

The reason behind the latter two strikes remains to be being investigated.

About 20% of the world’s oil often passes via the Strait of Hormuz and the conflict has despatched international oil costs hovering – reaching $100 a barrel at one level.

“Get ready for the oil barrel to be at $200 because the oil price depends on the regional security which you have destabilised,” Ebrahim Zolfaqari, spokesperson for Iran’s navy command mentioned.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump insisted fluctuations in costs have been a “matter of war” and “prices are coming down very substantially”.
