Father of Wales legend Gary Speed has died as tributes have been paid to an ‘incredible supporter of Welsh football’

Tributes have been paid following the loss of life of Roger Speed, the daddy of Wales legend and former nationwide staff supervisor Gary Speed.
The Football Association of Wales confirmed the information in a statement, describing Roger as a passionate supporter of the Welsh recreation.
It learn: “The FAW is saddened to learn of the passing of Roger Speed, who was an incredible supporter of Welsh football.
“Welsh football holds his son, Gary Speed, deeply in its heart, and Roger’s support and passion for the game will always be remembered.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Cwsg mewn hedd, Roger.”
Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads also paid tribute, revealing that Roger had served as an honorary patron and had long been associated with the club.
The membership posted: “It is with great sadness that the club has overnight learned of the passing of the great Roger Speed who was an honorary patron to the club and a long-time supporter, as well as the father of legendary Welsh player and manager Gary Speed.
“Our thoughts are with Carol and the rest of Roger’s family at this time.”
Gary Speed remains one of the most revered figures in Welsh football history. Born in Mancot, he went on to win 85 caps for Wales, scoring seven goals during an international career that spanned more than a decade.
A dynamic left-sided midfielder, he also enjoyed a remarkable club career, playing 841 matches and scoring 135 goals.
He famously won the old First Division title with Leeds United in 1992 before later spells with Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United.
After retiring from playing, Speed moved into management and was in charge of the Wales national side at the time of his death in 2011 at the age of 42.
He is widely credited with laying the foundations for the resurgence of Welsh football in the years that followed, helping to reshape the national side’s culture and belief before the country’s later qualification for major tournaments.
Roger Speed remained intently related to the Welsh recreation and to the reminiscence of his son, who continues to be held within the highest regard throughout Wales.
